My Seed Story

What’s a Zine? A zine (say it like zeen) is like your very own little mini-book that you make all by yourself! It can be about anything you love for example your pets, your favourite snacks, your doodles, or even a made-up story.

1. Fold and Prepare Your Book

Fold one sheet of A4 paper into an 8-page mini-zine. (Teachers: pre-fold, or guide students through folding and cutting.) Lightly label each page in pencil.

2. Look at Real Plant Books

Share picture books or science texts that show seed diagrams. Ask guiding questions such as: “What happens to a seed over time?” “How do the pictures help explain it?”

3. Plan Your Seed Story

Guide students with prompts: “What kind of seed will you draw; an apple, mango, or a mystery fruit?” “Who finds the seed; you, a girl, or an animal?” “What happens as it grows?”

4. Draw Each Stage of the Seed’s Journey

Assign one page for each stage: Cover, Seed is found, Seed is planted, What it needs to grow, A sprout appears, A young tree begins to grow, A big, full-grown tree, Back Cover.

5. Decorate and Title

Design the cover with bright lettering and patterns using YUDU Gel Crayons and Brush Pens. Add collage elements (sun, clouds, animals, grass) to bring the book to life.

6. Book Gallery & Sharing

Students present their zines page by page in a mini read-aloud. Encourage expressive voices and let them hold up their books. Ask guiding questions such as: “What was your seed story about?” “What did your seed need to grow?” “What was your favourite page to draw?”
