Celebrating Lunar New Year

The Lunar New Year is celebrated across Asia and marks the beginning of a new year based on the moon’s cycle. One of the most powerful and lucky symbols during this festival is the dragon - a creature that represents strength, health, protection, and good fortune. In this project, students will create a bold dragon artwork using painting, printing, cutting, and collage techniques. Inspired by traditional colours and patterns seen during Lunar New Year celebrations, students will explore texture, movement, and symbolic meaning through mixed-media art.

1. Explore New Year Traditions Around the World

Show students visuals or videos of New Year celebrations. Explain that dragons are important symbols of good luck and power in Lunar New Year celebrations.

2. Paint the Dragon Scales

Give each student a large paper plate. First, colour the base of the plate in a warm colour. Using wet media and printing techniques, decorate the surface.

3. Cut and Assemble the Dragon

Cut the plate into four quarters to create curved dragon scales. Arrange the scales in a winding line on black paper to form the dragon's body. Design another dragon part using coloured paper. Stick everything with Fevicol MR.

4. Add Details and Present

Attach googly eyes or draw eyes to bring the dragon to life. Support students in choosing a title.
