Clay Art For Awareness

The Earth's resources and wildlife are shared by all living things. Human actions can either protect or harm the planet's biodiversity. Noughts and crosses (also called tic tac toe) is a simple strategy game. In this learning engagement, students will sculpt and decorate a playable noughts and crosses game using clay, with designs that symbolise the balance between protecting and threatening nature.

1. Shape the Base

Pick a colour from the various shades of YUDU Magic Clay. Roll it into a thick round disc. Etch simple continent outlines for an Earth texture and smooth edges with water.

2. Create X’s (Birds) and O’s (Bones)

Choose clay colours and sculpt 5 birds (X) with wings and beaks. Use contrasting colours to sculpt 5 bones (O) in curved or straight forms.

3. Dry and Assemble

Before the clay hardens, with a clay tool, draw a tic-tac-toe grid onto the Earth's base. Place the Earth base and all the bird and bone pieces on a flat surface to dry fully.

4. Play & Reflect

Play with birds (X) vs. bones (O), using the contrast to spark discussion about endangered species and loss.
