3D Colour Creatures

Art is a powerful way to express thoughts, feelings, and culture. Inspired by Noguchi’s style, students will create colourful paper sculptures that explore shapes, balance, and movement. They’ll start with flat (2D) designs, then transform them into standing (3D) “creatures” using colour, texture, and imagination.

1. Introduce the Artist

Show students examples of Isamu Noguchi's sculptures. Talk about how he used shape and space to express feelings.

2. Choose Colours & Cut Shapes

Provide construction paper in analogous colours. Students cut out abstract shapes - some big, some small, some curved etc.

3. Create a 2D Artwork

Using Fevicol, students arrange and glue their shapes on both sides of a piece of cardboard. Discuss balance, rhythm, and movement.

4. Build and Paint the 3D Sculpture

Transform the flat artwork into a sculpture. Cut slots or fold pieces to make them stand upright. Use Fevicol to glue or attach parts together. Add "legs" or bend shapes so they become standing "creatures."

5. Display the Creatures

Set up a display area in the classroom or corridor. Help students arrange their sculptures and give each creature a name.

6. Reflect and Share

Hold a class discussion. Ask guiding questions such as: "What kind of creature did you create?", "What was fun or tricky?", "What did you learn about colour or making things stand up?"
